I find color trends to be a funny thing. All paint companies have them, Pantone being one of the biggest and most followed, but ultimately no matter how much you like or dislike the choices we eventually are all sucked into drinking the kool aid. Why? Because it appears in fashion. We see it in the clothes we buy and it trickles down into shelter magazines and into stores like pottery barn, West Elm and every other home decor store. Without even realizing it you suddenly start liking blue despite never really being fond of the color.
Orange was one of those colors ten years ago. I remember when I lived in Las Vegas my design team and I were starting to put it into our model home projects. It was a rising trend even though everything on the shelves was still red. By the time I moved to Tennessee, many were still hanging on to the red trend but orange was fast approaching every where. Now people love it and dislike red. Funny how that happens.
Pantone’s color for 2013 is Monaco Blue. Eh, can’t say I’m really fan. It’s a bit too beachy blue for my tastes…..or is it? Without even realizing it the last two homes I have built design concepts for have incorporated a strong blue palette. Interesting!
This morning as I flipped through my emails I received Benjamin Moores top color for 2013: Lemon Sorbet
Eh, can’t say I’m really a fan of yellow…..hmmm, guess we will see where this takes us! What do you think of the proposed upcoming colors? Like or dislike?

I’m going to have a lot of trouble getting on board with that yellow… we’ll see, like you said! Is is just me or are those colors getting dangerously close to the country kitchens that were around when I was growing up??? I didn’t realize it until they were right next to each other!
Hmmm… I’m not surprised about the blue from Pantone. I am a little bit by the sorbet from BM. I am in fact thinking,of getting rid of the yellow in my home that would be closest to that color. Trading it in for a soft turquoise. Which means I am way behind the trends, at least in the Pantone world ;). I do have a dining room that is very close in color to the deepest color shown on the BM board. And I painted a guest room Van Deusen blue within the last 12 months.
Not really sure about either of those colors. Did love Tangerine Tango from last year but never did care for the honeysuckle pink and am getting very tired of all the turquoise. But it is always interesting to see where all this goes during the next year and both colors will work with last years orange so rooms in the design mags should be lively!
Pantone fooled us all and announced this week that emerald green is their color of the year in spite of the fact that everyone else, including CMG chose some shade of blue. I am not a fan of blue but do love the green….the yellow, not so sure
