Let’s face it, we spend a lot of time in our bathrooms. It’s one of the first places we see in the morning, and one of the last places we go in the evening. It never ceases to amaze me how many bathrooms I go into that look like a war zone. But then again, with a constant flurry of activity it’s no surprise that most would look that way. But despite the abuse we give them – blow dryers, curling irons, razors, and other toiletries,  why not also adorn them with decadent luxuries that uplift your mood?

In recent years the bathroom has become a place of serenity. Homeowners are doing all that they can to create a spa-like effect with their fixtures and finishes. But is that really enough? If you are like most of my clients, it most certainly is not.

A couple of weeks ago I met with a new homeowner that was tired of feeling stressed when she entered her bathroom. There was clutter everywhere. Hairbrushes, a blowdryer and clothes flung everywhere. I could tell she was stressed just looking at it. So we divulged a plan, and my goal was to show her how to easily add decadence to her space.

How To Easily Add Decadence To Your Bathroom

1) Clutter

Seems like a no-brainer, but clutter is the least sexy thing you can have in your bathroom. Create a system. I recommend getting the book by Marie Kondo on How to Tidy up.Rather than cleaning by room, she recommends cleaning by category – and according to her she has never had a client rebound.

2) Add fresh flowers

Once you bathroom is clean and organized, now its time to add decadence. A great place to start is having fresh cut flowers. Whether you purchase at the store or grab some from the garden, nothing lifts your mood better than fresh cut flowers.

3) Mirrors

Get fancy with your mirrors. Just because the builder threw up a cheap flat panel mirror, doesn’t mean you have to keep it. Find a beautiful vintage option or visit your local flea market and fall in love with an option that makes your heart skip a beat.

4) Faucets

And easy fix to instantly transform your space is to update your faucets. The builder will often throw in a less expensive, generic option that appeals to the masses. But instead, why not find a stunning brass or nickel option that looks like jewelry in your space?

5) Lighting

Nothing feels more decadent than a fancy chandelier or lamp in the bathroom. And remember, put everything on dimmers so you have the option of adding ambience.

6) Paint

Nothing transforms a space better than new paint. I often opt for soft whites because it feels fresh, but whatever makes you feel great, start there!

7) Towels

Upgrade your towels. Good quality towels are the difference between taking your time and rushing through your space. They are the closest thing to your skin – so invest. There is a reason Oprah said the first thing she bought when she got money was good linens and towels, the gal knows what she’s talking about!

8) Candles

Candles can truly transform your space and lift your mood. They appeal to all the senses and can wash away your hectic day. Many of us have way too much stress in our lives so be decadent and buy good quality candles that make you feel fancy.

9) Treats

Nothing says decadence like a jar of treats in the bathroom. Whether you fill it with granola bars or hershey kisses, give yourself a break and enjoy the sweeter side of life!

I think it’s also important to say that you must get clear on what you really want your results to be. When I first asked my client what she wanted she simply said a stress-free zone. But that is a vague response. When I asked more questions she replied. ” I really want a space that feels calm and feminine. A place that collects me and makes me feel whole. I want to wash away the day, read a book and enjoy a glass of wine. I want to feel glamorous.” So as you can see her first reply and her second reply were quite different. But getting clear on your goals will help you get clear on the results!
