I love decorating bedrooms but they are often the most neglected rooms in the house. Typically, clients will invest the majority of their decorating dollars into their “public” spaces, leaving their bedroom naked and boring – since most don’t see it. However, that is a big mistake. You spend a third of your life in your bedroom, so make it pretty! It is the space you wake up in and it’s the last space you see before retiring to sleep. A space that uplifts you, inspires you and brings peace, is one that will create true rest. A room filled with clutter, poor paint choices, and mismatched furniture without intention, will feel disorganized, and frumpy…so how would you like to start and end your day? Frumpy or invigorated?

To design a modern, sophisticated bedroom many interior designers have basic tricks up their sleeve to create beautiful spaces. If unfamiliar with these tricks it can be hard to find inspiration, or even have an idea where to start. But fear not, I am here to let you in on nine secrets to help you design the perfect feng shui bedroom to boost your energy and get you moving in the right direction for health, wealth and lots of love.
Feng Shui Bedroom: The Essentials
1) Bedding essentials
Assuming that you already have a bed, a stylish and sleek bedroom is never without great linens. Purchase the best you can afford and always keep them simple because that promotes a better nights sleep. A textured coverlet, white sheets, and a fluffy duvet are the essentials. Here is one of my favorite sheet sets to get you started. Far to often I see many clients with mismatched sets, or worse, twenty-year old sheets still in rotation with holes in them! Tattered old bed linens will subconsciously make you feel the same, and that’s not restful. You’re worth every bit of those luxurious linens, so give yourself a better nights sleep and an upgrade, you deserve it!!
2) Pillows
Always have comfortable bed pillows in crisp white pillow cases combined with soft patterned accent pillows. Accents add color, texture and style to your space without being fussy. It needn’t be complicated, one to two accents will do the trick and the funkier the better! And if your pillows are old, throw them out! I won’t go into details but old pillows harbor old energy and dust mites – both of which will interrupt your sleep. We release stress and other energies when we lay our heads down at night – so if your pillow saw you through the death of your mom, your divorce, or cancer – get it out of your house! Pacific Coast is one of my favorite brands for high quality sleep pillows.
3) Lamps
Choose lamps that are tall and sleek. Never choose a lamp below 28″ unless you hate to actually see in your bedroom. Lamps in fun pops of color, large drum shades and dimmers are an excellent choice for a bedroom and you can easily find a pair for a quick update that doesn’t break the bank. (And never use CFL bulbs in your bedroom, they are bad for your health.) Lamps are also a great way to mix finishes. If your nightstand has brushed nickel knobs don’t shy away from a brass lamp, mix it up and have fun with it for a more eclectic look. Lamps are often near corners in our bedroom shining light up – this stirs up the chi energy and creates a lovely atmosphere of relaxation and peace. But keep those lamps and cords at least 30″ from where your head rests at night to prevent electromagnetic fields from disrupting your sleep.
4) Clocks
When designing a bedroom I always look for funky, vintage or vintage inspired clocks to decorate a nightstand. We have a number of these in our local Nashville area. A clock adds personality and whimsy to your bedroom. But choose one that speaks to you. Clocks are another way to move energy in a space and while most of us hate the sound of an alarm, clocks create routine and movement. A battery powered clock is also better for our health, and they are easy to find for a discount.
5) Nightstands
Many clients think their whole bedroom set needs to come as a suite. Never make this mistake. Whether your style is easy traditional, or uber modern, always mix it up. Find nightstands that compliment your decor but also add style. Make sure they are similar if not exactly the same size, and never, ever, have only one nightstand, especially if you are single.
Another important key to nightstands is storage. Many of us have cluttered up nightstands which will kill any stylish design, and weigh you down mentally. Instead, find night stands that compliment your lifestyle. For example, a nightstand with drawers and shelves is a great way to store books, magazines, and more. And be cautious with nightstands that have pointy corners. These are considered poison arrows in feng shui, so find furniture that is rounded and soft.
6) Art
Never leave out the art! I always recommend custom whenever you can, but no matter what, art is what makes a space. Art adds texture, depth and mood to a space. Remember to always hang art at eye level and here you have a free pass when it comes to style….so buy what you love!
On a side note, choose your art wisely. I once had a client who had an original piece of art in her bedroom that was a headless mannequin made of cut up sewing patterns. She couldn’t figure out why she could not attract love and why the men she dated kept ripping her heart to shreds……
7) Storage
As I mentioned with the nightstands above, storage is essential in a bedroom. Unfortunately, many people have turned their bedroom into a dumping ground since it is the last place they land at night and no one sees it. Laptops, iPads, cords, phones, paper, magazines…But it doesn’t have to ruin your style, or keep you unorganized. Look for clever ways to store your books, paper, magazines, clippers, lotions etc in decorative boxes, baskets, stylish bookshelves, or ottomans. One of my best kept decorating secrets is using storage pieces from kids websites. The bookshelves are often petite, can fit in between windows, and are low. Whatever works best for your lifestyle, use it! Clutter is postponed energy, so if you’re tired of waiting around for the love of your life, or that new promotion, look at your surroundings – what are you putting off?
8) Chair
Having a comfy spot to read a good book, thumb through a magazine or even tie your shoes is always a great improvement in a bedroom. Plus it just looks more cozy! This promotes relaxation, comfort and mindfulness. This can also be a great place to grab a quick 5 to 10 minutes to yourself to collect your thoughts, organize goals and get clear on your intentions for the day or week. All excellent feng shui practices. According to author Ester Hicks, from The Law of Attraction, it only takes 17 seconds of thought for the law of attraction to get into motion. It only takes 68 seconds to make that same thought start manifesting. So make it your manifestation chair!
9) Electronics
As useful and helpful as our modern day electronics are, they are disastrous to our health. They interrupt sleep, cause headaches, and in extreme cases, cause cancer. One of my feng shui instructors shared a story of how both a husband and wife came down with brain cancer after moving into their condo. Turns out, the entire electrical grid for their condo complex was on the same wall as their bed.
We are electrical beings, and surrounded by energy. To think that electronics don’t interrupt or affect us is asinine. Remove that power strip you have under your bed or worse on your nightstand! Place all phones, computers, iPods, and iPads in the other room or keep them in the kitchen. And if you must keep your phone in your bedroom, place it on the opposite wall of your bed, and place an amethyst crystal on your nightstand.

Great tips. I use my phone as my alarm clock and I don’t fathom I’ll be able to change that habit as I’ve done it for over 10 or 12 years now. I’ll put my bug amethyst geode by it from now on. Amethyst soothes me for sleeping anyway! Ant tips on where to store my mineral collection? Sometimes I wonder if part of my disturbed sleep is fto keeping all my tumbled specimens in the bedroom with me.
Kim
Using your phone as an alarm is not necessarily a bad thing, just don’t keep it by your head. Most people don’t realize that the wifi on there phones is emitting an EMF all night long. That will definitely keep you up!
If you have a collection of stones you may want to take a closer look at what each one does. They can in fact disrupt sleep as many carry active energy. It may be a good idea to create an alter either on the other side of your room or to place them in a space that has more active energy like a family room.
Good luck

Perhaps you mentioned this previously, but I’ve suggested to clients to eliminate the ubiquitous television set from the bedroom. So much bad energy comes out of these boxes, one must at least cover them with a cloth so that big black box is not constantly emitting negative energy into the bedroom. I’m sure you agree.

Unfortunately the TV is a necessary evil in most rooms; one that most refuse to eliminate. So if you can’t beat’em, join em! Yes indeed, it’s terrible energy
and most clients will wake feeling drained and wonder why. SO I always suggest natural stones, salt and other remedies to eliminate as much negative energy, and EMF
as possible. I find that bedrooms typically have the highest EMF readings in the whole house! Ack!
After reading this I am extremely concerned about the master bedroom we just built in the basement. The electrical panel with all the breakers are in this room. In the same corner where our bed will be near…. any suggestions??
Melanie,
This will be harmful to your health. Call in a bau biologist.

great post regarding bedroom decor….have a new house and feeling so drained all the time. Bedroom only has a bed and chair in it right now so your tips were very helpful…..peace, Susan
Susan
Feeling drained can mean a lot of different things. In addition to creating a sanctuary in your bedroom, pay close attention to your bathroom. Are the faucets leaking, toilet running, or pipes
not working well? If you have an attached bathroom, close the door. This will alleviate the lack of rest you are clearing getting.
Thanks
Amanda
I need to make some major changes in my home and have been curious about this method.
Carole
I can’t explain why it works, but its’ mystical effects are trumped by the results I see time and time again.
Try it! It’s worth the transformation!

I’ve read that the foot of the bed should never face the bedroom door nor should the bed be placed under a window. I am moving in 2 days and these areas are the only possible places that I can put my bed (and also been placing my bed in the wrong spot my whole life!) Is there something I can place or a color I can use to contraindicated any bad energy?
Michele
Thanks for the question. The most important factor is placing your bed in command, which is facing a door. It’s not ideal to have a bed at a window, however, as long as you have a solid headboard that is fairly tall that acts as a strong barrier. If your feet are facing the door this can deplete your Chi, making you feel fatigued even after a full night of rest. So place a crystal above the door.

I’ll soon have a baby and he/she’ll share room with me, I’ve been working on finding a perfect bedroom so far but I don’t think I’ll be able to keep that great feng shui on my bedroom anymore soon after the baby arrives
Lia
You absolutely can. Just be mindful of layout and the products you put in your space. It doesn’t take much to get it right!

Thanks for this post. I always place my cell phone in my master bathroom away from my bed for the reasons you mentioned. I have been looking for an attractive vintage-look battery-powered alarm clock that does NOT tick because the ticking keeps me awake. (Pottery Barn’s small alarm clock ticks, so I cannot use it.) Right now I am making do with an ugly travel alarm. Can you suggest any websites or stores?
Susan
Unfortunately many of them do tick and its hard to avoid with the way the mechanics work.
One thing that I have found extremely helpful is my sound machine.
Its a soft, consistent noise that helps me sleep and tunes out the background noise.
Good luck!

Thank you for all your advice, I am new in feng shui, I am single I have never had good luck in love. I was reading to add red for fire I am more modern and not crazy about adding red to my room. My room is more grey and white. What can I do? Also is it ok if I just add one clock to my room instead of a pair?
Jeny,
If you consistently have bad luck in love it’s likely showing up in your floor plan, which is inhibiting you further. You do not need red for fire or even pairs of anything. That is what I call Westernized
Feng Shui. Grey and white may be perfectly fine, however it also depends on your personal Chi. Grey and White are not very nurturing, especially if your bedroom is in the back of the house. Choose an actual color, like pink, yellow, blue – that accents well with the muted tones, and then consider getting a floor plan reading. Lack of love has nothing to do with physical items, but has everything to do with the energy alignment in your floor plan.
